Gabriel Melhado is a documentary photographer from Londrina, Brazil, whose work focuses on the country's housing crisis and social conflicts. After earning a law degree from Londrina State University in 2017, he began practicing as a labor lawyer but soon shifted his focus to photography, driven by a desire to address pressing social issues.
In 2019, Gabriel launched his first long-term project, documenting the Ocupação Flores do Campo, one of Londrina's most surveilled neighborhoods, in collaboration with Coletivo FotoFlores, a photo collective he founded with local youth. His work has been featured in outlets like Brasil de Fato and Folha de Londrina, highlighting stories of housing movements and social struggles.
In 2021-22, Gabriel was awarded a Director's Fellowship to study Documentary Practices and Visual Journalism at the International Center of Photography in New York. In 2023, he exhibited his project Comrades at Centro Cultural Grafatório. The following year, with funding from Londrina's Cultural Department, he established a cultural center in Flores do Campo, inaugurating it with a collective exhibition by Coletivo FotoFlores. In December 2024, Gabriel earned a postgraduate degree in Popular and Community Communication from Londrina State University.
